Leather, suede, nubuck - what's the difference?

The first thing to note about this is that whether it's full grain leather, suede or nubuck - we're talking about leather!

To understand the difference between the three products, it is best to go to the original source, namely the raw animal skin.

Generally speaking, the structure and chemical composition of raw animal skin is layered. The following three layers are distinguished: outer - epidermis, inner - dermis and inner subcutaneous connective tissue. he dermis is the main part of the skin, which accounts for 85-95% of the skin's thickness.

Before the heat treatment to obtain the facial skin, several processes are carried out. First, the subcutaneous connective tissue (fat and muscle) is removed. Next is the division of the inner dermis and the separation of part of it by machine processing. This is necessary to make the skin more amenable to processing. The top layer - the hair - is removed last, as most products are made from clean facial skin.

According to the origin and the method of processing, the following types of materials can be obtained from the leather for the production of various goods: full grain leather, nubuck and suede.

Facial skin

The facial leather is obtained by tanning - a physico-chemical process, as a result of which the treated leather acquires new properties - the hydrothermal resistance increases, as well as the resistance to decay under the influence of oxidants.

Velor

Some people perceive suede as leather turned inside out, and this is exactly the case, with the difference that in order to have suede as a result, a special treatment is needed on the inside of the leather, to obtain soft and clearly visible smooth fibers. The most commonly used source for making suede is calf leather, but it can also be made from sheep, goat, pig, etc. skin.

Suede is produced by sandblasting the inner surface of the leather. This gives it a velvety softness, but also makes it less resistant to scratches and stains.

People often mistake suede for a more moisture-vulnerable material. This is a mistake, because as we said, suede is made from the inside of leather, which makes it just as water resistant as any other type of leather.

Proper maintenance of suede is extremely important to preserve its shape and appearance for a long period of time In order for the suede to look fluffy as in its original form, it is good to brush it with a special brush, which will prevent flattening and the irregular appearance of its texture.

Nabuc

Historically, the first nubuck was made of deerskin and was introduced to the American market in 1930. Initially, its offering did not meet with great success until the Duke of Windsor made his visit to the United States. He appeared wearing an oxford-made nubuck, which led to his imposition on the market.

Nubuck is mainly made from the outer layer of calf leather. The technological process of processing is similar to that of the production of suede - sand grinding. In most cases, nubuck is more expensive than suede . This is because the outer layer of the skin is more durable than the inner layer, as its main function is to protect animals from injury. Because of this, nubuck is rougher and more durable. The disadvantage of it is that when the outer layer is sanded, the physical imperfections of the skin may remain noticeable.

Due to the hardness of nubuck, it must be cleaned with a special brush, different from that of suede, in order not to damage its surface.

The perception that suede and nubuck are more difficult to maintain than smooth facial leather is also wrong. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Both materials require significantly less maintenance. Since they have a mossy surface, there is no need for daily polishing.

How to choose the most suitable shoe size?

How to correctly measure the size of the foot to choose a suitable number of shoes, especially if the child is not with us.

1. The child should step on a piece of paper with both feet next to each other, not behind each other (this would change the correct size).

2. Outline the foot. The child should not be wearing slippers, shoes or anything else, as this would also change the correct size. It can be barefoot or just in socks.

3. Mark the points at the longest toe (it may not be the thumb) and the heel.

4. Measure the size with a centimeter or save the outline you made.

5. It is appropriate to add about 6-7mm to this size in order to get the correct insole size for the shoe you are about to buy. This is the necessary advance for growth during the season as well as freedom of movement of the toes inside the shoe.

6. The "One toe back" system can mislead you if the child has not placed the foot in the shoe optimally forward, if you only check at the ankle and not inside the heel.

7. Remember that in each individual model, the child can wear a different number of shoes. Foot size and insole size are important.

8. In the "Pantofen Svyat" store, each model and size is measured separately by a centimeter.
